Glossary: R

Radial Design - Circular design radiating from a center.

Raku - A fast-firing, spontaneous clay method derived from the Japanese Raku dynasties of potters (1500 to present).

Ream - 500 sheets of paper

Realism - A style of art that seeks to reproduce reality precisely rather than to idealize or interpret it.

Reflected Color - The color perceived from an object, determined by the wavelength of the light leaving its surface after selective absorption of other wavelengths of the incident light — the light hitting the surface. Reflected light behaves in specific ways that differentiate it from colors produced by sources of light. The concept of reflected color is related to subtractive color — color produced by mixing cyan, yellow, and magenta pigments, each of which absorbs specific wavelengths. A balanced mixture of these colorant or subtractive primaries theoretically yields black since it absorbs all wavelengths of visible light. Also, see additive, local color, optical mixing, and primary colors.

Reflected light - Refers to light bouncing from an illuminated surface, usually into a shadow. Also called diffuse inter-reflection.

Reflection - The color perceived from an object, determined by the wavelength of the light leaving its surface after selective absorption of other wavelengths of the incident light — the light hitting the surface. Reflected light behaves in specific ways that differentiate it from colors produced by sources of light. Relief - Refers to a Printmaking process. All printing processes in which the non-printing areas of the block or plate are carved, engraved, or etched away. Inks are applied onto the protected surface and transferred onto the paper. The reverse process is known as intaglio printing.

Refraction - An image given back by a reflecting surface, such as that of a mirror or still water. Each ray of light that hits a surface is an incident ray of light. Rays that are neither absorbed nor reflected are scattered rays of light. A person sees a more precise reflection when a high number and percentage of rays are reflected, and a small number of rays are either absorbed or scattered.

Rembrandt Lighting - A portrait lighting arrangement where the head is lit on the far side of the face, leaving a lighted triangle on the cheek closest to the viewer.

Repetition - Pattern and rhythm, or repetition, show consistency with colors or lines. Rhythm or the repetition of elements can make a piece seem active or indicate movement.

Representational - Term used to describe art that depicts a subject as it appears.

Reproduction - Copy of an original artwork. An example is a photograph or a print of an original artwork.

Resist Medium - Material applied to a surface to protect it from liquids such as paint or dye.

Rhythm - Refers to the suggestion of motion or beat through the elements in an artwork. Rhythm is a principle of design.

Rubbing - Copy of a textured or raised surface made by placing paper over the surface and rubbing the paper with chalk, pencil, or crayon.
